Steph Key Euthanasia Bill passes second reading

We have just heard that South Australia's Steph Key Bill passed its Second Reading stage in the lower house and has been referred to committee for final amendments. It will then go to the upper house. This stage passed on the voices without any MP calling for a division which means there is no Parliamentary record of who voted which way on this very important Bill.

Supporting the Position Statement

Here those individuals and organisations are listed who wish to publicly express their support for the ProLiving Euthanasia Position Paper.

The Foundation for Social Inclusion Inc. at its meeting last Thursday fully endorsed the Position Statement of ProLiving related to proposed legislation before South Australian Parliament. It is our considered view that if passed,this legislation will further compound vulnerability experienced by people with disabilities and likely other traditionally marginalised population groups. It goes to question the very fibre of Australian societal values.
Of further concern to us and indeed as should be to all citizens, is the lack of attention to Australia's commitment/compliance to the principles and underpinning values of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
This proposed legislation has the potential to generate societal regression to the eugenics mindset which featured in an era not long past and sadly is still experienced in some pockets (particularly education and health) through institutional structures and attidudes.
We urge all participating representatives to consider deeply the ramifications of such legislation and the message it can send to society and future generations about values, integrity and respect for every human life.
